Paul J Wong
Registered Psychotherapist
Hey there!
Thanks for dropping in to check out my website. I’m Paul. For most of my life I have been known as "PJ" in different roles - support worker, pastor, addictions worker, spiritual care therapist, community youth worker and local farmer. When we meet, you’re welcome to refer to me by either name.
For over a decade I’ve had a passion for helping people find meaning, value, joy and peace in their lives. In the past, my role as a pastor and my passion for individual counselling for issues of depression, anxiety, relationship distress and addiction led people to seek spiritual and social guidance from me. I suppose the reason why people felt safe with me was my irreligious approach to life, spirituality and the ability to help them find the calmness in their chaos.
As a therapist, I enjoy working with couples, individuals and families – walking with them them through problems that they feel stuck in. I will admit, the first few sessions often feel like we’re just painting a picture of the problem and finding a few ways to cope; but through time, the folks who I’m lucky enough to work with begin to find themselves more hopeful and are able to find a new way of seeing and relating with the world around them, but more importantly—they begin to relate to themselves differently.
Outside of the office you’ll find me hiding away on our small farm, spending time with my kids and enjoying the little things in life. I do my best not to hide behind big words and titles; but bring the humanness to the sacred connection in the therapy room. At its core, I do believe therapy is simply two human beings, sharing their stories and finding our way through the darkest times of our lives. As someone who’s been in the therapy chair, I get it. Life is tough and the road is hard. But we don’t have to walk it alone. I’ve been thankful to the therapists in my own life who have walked me through the hardest times… and I’m grateful every single time someone invites me to walk a mile or two on the path they are walking.
You can read more about my style of therapy it in the "How I Can Help You" section of this website. My approach focuses on personal strengths to solve problems, looking past diagnoses to see the person and hear the story, and using my expertise as a psychotherapist in a down-to-earth and relatable manner.
My hope is that as you read this, you can connect the dots of what we may have in common and where I might be of help to you. And when you feel ready, feel free to either send me and email or give me a call personally (519.313.0716) to discuss a time to meet. My phone number and email is also located in the contact section at the bottom of this website as well.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
How I Can Help You
My approach as a therapist is to meet you where you're at, in light of where you've come, in order to help you get to where you want to be. Though one may assume that a professional comes in with all of the answers, my style of helping operates out of the belief that you are the one with the answers. I am simply a consultant in helping you discover and tap into the attributes and abilities which you already possess. Many people who seek my services come with issues of:
Depression and Anxiety
Marital and Relationship Issues
Affairs
Coping with a Mental Health Disorder
Addiction (Substance and Process)
Grief and Loss
Issues with Family Members and Friends
Codependency
Anger Management
Men's Issues
Trauma
And Other Issues Which Make Life Difficult to Manage
There are other times when people seek me out while in a healthy place, but wishing to explore their own values, assumptions and beliefs. When this happens, most people are able to find deeper meaning and purpose in their lives.
Each issue may require a different response in terms of what therapeutic approach I use and your personalist style will likely determine what approach is most helpful. For some who are more analytical in nature, the Cognitive Behavioural approach may help. Others who are more imaginative and prefer metaphors may prefer a Narrative or DBT approach. For those wanting to go deeper into their history may benefit from a Family Systems or Attachment framework such as Emotionally Focused Therapy or Inner Child work. In our first session, we can chat more about what approach might be of most help to you.
